If you are asking whether an image is AI-generated—or whether the claim inside a screenshot is a scam—the finished answer should separate those questions. An image can be assessed as likely authentic, likely AI-generated, or unverifiable. The claim it shows can receive a different verdict: true, false, or inconclusive.

That distinction matters. Checking only how an image looks does not answer whether the text inside it is accurate. Checking only the text does not establish how the image was made. Start with the specific question you need answered: “Is this image likely AI-generated?” “Is the claim in this screenshot true?” or “Can the available evidence settle either question?”

The manual method

First, preserve the original file if you have it. Avoid relying only on a compressed repost or a cropped version. Note where you found it, who shared it, when it appeared, and what it claims to show. Keep the caption and surrounding post, because they may change the meaning of the image.

Next, inspect the image closely. Read every visible word, including labels, signs, captions, and small text. Look for details that need separate checking: names, dates, locations, figures, logos, quotations, or claims about an event. If the image contains a screenshot, treat the screenshot’s text as the claim to investigate rather than as proof of the claim.

Then look for the image’s wider context. Search distinctive phrases from the caption or screenshot. Search names, dates, and places separately. If available, use a reverse-image search to look for earlier appearances or different versions. Compare the earliest source you can find with the version being shared now. Record what each source actually supports instead of treating repeated copies as independent confirmation.

For a possible AI image, inspect the visual details and compare the image with any available source context. Do not turn one unusual detail into a definitive conclusion. If the available evidence does not settle the image’s origin, the accurate result is unverifiable.

For a claim, open the sources behind the result rather than relying on a headline, caption, or screenshot. Check whether the source addresses the same person, event, date, and wording. Separate what is directly supported from what the post suggests. If the evidence conflicts or cannot settle the question, stop at an inconclusive result instead of forcing a yes or no.

Where manual checking stops

Manual checking depends on the file, context, and sources you can access. A cropped image may remove useful information. A screenshot may omit the original link.
