Does Temu give free stuff?

What is real

The Temu app does have gifts, credits and discounts, but they come with conditions. Two things are worth knowing before you start:

• Many gifts ask you to invite several new people. In October 2025, SlashGear described what Temu's free-gift events ask for: referring people who have never downloaded the app, and getting them to sign up, install it and sometimes make a purchase within 24 hours of signing up. One invitation moved the progress bar just far enough to look almost done; after a second, the target moved again. In March 2024, Make Tech Easier said invited friends had to sign up within 24 hours of receiving the invitation. Temu's US terms of use do not say what each game asks for: they say a promotion may have its own rules, and that where those rules conflict with the terms, the promotion's rules govern.
• A first-use test ended in purchases. In July 2026, the Brazilian tech site TechTudo asked whether Temu gives products away for free and answered: "Na prática, não" ("In practice, no"). It tested what someone sees on first opening the app: the prize wheel on the home screen. The products showed at R$ 0.00, but to "unlock" them the app asked for a minimum purchase of R$ 50 (Brazilian reais); after it, only one gift was released, and the rest took a second purchase of R$ 40. The value of the first purchase came back as stars, the app's own currency, not as money. TechTudo concluded that a paid purchase is always required at some point. The article does not mention invitations.

The two do not fully agree: the coverage of the referral games describes gifts you get by inviting new people; TechTudo, which started from the wheel shown on first opening the app and does not mention invitations, found gifts that were released only after paid purchases. In March 2024, Make Tech Easier also described a new-user offer that came with a purchase: up to three free products, but only in a seven-item order, so the rest of the order was not free. What is circulating

In October 2025, SlashGear wrote that Temu's free-item promotions had become almost as famous as the app itself. In the app there are prize wheels, games and challenges that promise free products, some in exchange for inviting other people. That is why the question keeps coming up in different forms: does Temu really give free stuff, why is it giving me free stuff, and what do I have to do to get it?

There have also been ads and messages that use Temu's name to promise gifts outside the app. Those are something else, and they are further down.

What VOM found

According to the sources VOM reviewed, many of Temu's offers of free products are linked to downloading the app and inviting others. New users who install the app and register an account can receive welcome incentives such as store credits, free gifts or coupon bundles.

One of the main ways to earn free items is Temu's referral system: you invite friends to download the app and sign up, and both of you can get rewards such as coupons, credits or physical items. Several in-app games and campaigns, such as "Hat Trick" and "Fishland," ask you to invite new people to download the app through a personal referral link to progress and unlock free gifts.

Meeting the requirements for these free items, especially in the referral games, can be hard, and it can come with conditions such as shipping fees or specific eligibility rules for new app users. Even so, the mechanism the claim describes is one Temu offers.

VOM does not log into your Temu account or see your progress in a game: it reads what public sources say.

The conditions, one by one

• Temu's rules. Temu's US terms of use (last updated November 7, 2025) say that by using its services you may receive credits, coupons, cash, gifts or other rewards. Some can only be used as discounts on, or payment for, eligible purchases and cannot be redeemed for cash, except where the law requires it. Games, sweepstakes and similar promotions may be governed by separate rules, and if those rules conflict with the terms, the promotion's rules govern.
• Who counted as an invitation. According to SlashGear (October 2025), the people you referred had to be new users who had never downloaded the app, and they had to sign up, install it and sometimes make a purchase within 24 hours of signing up. Make Tech Easier (March 2024) said friends had to sign up within 24 hours of receiving your invitation.
• The target can move. When you first join a free-gift event, SlashGear wrote, the app may tell you that you are already 99% of the way to your choice of freebies. The first invitation moved the progress bar forward just enough to look almost done, and after the second the target moved again.
• Gifts earned by spending. SlashGear also wrote that free gifts earned by reaching a spending threshold cannot all be claimed at once: Temu asks you to log in to the app every day, and sometimes to spend a certain amount, to claim one gift a day.
• New-user offers. Make Tech Easier (March 2024) said the "$100 coupon bundle" offered for downloading the app was a set of smaller coupons, each with a minimum order (for example, $10 off orders over $40), and that the up to three free products offered to new users came inside a seven-item order, so the rest of the order was not free.
• Games and the Mystery Gift. The same guide described Fishland, where you feed fish for points, Farmland, where you water crops, and holiday games, plus a Mystery Gift of up to six products that you complete by sending invitations to friends. It said reports online pointed to the mini-games as the surest way to get free gifts.
• Shipping. Make Tech Easier warned that shipping fees could be high and occasionally even more than the product was worth. SlashGear wrote that, although Temu promotes free standard shipping, some users have been charged a shipping fee for the freebies they won.

Ads and messages that use Temu's name

Not everything that promises Temu gifts comes from Temu. In March 2026, blue News described emails that copy Temu's look and suggest that people will win an exclusive gift, then ask them to take a survey and pay a small delivery fee. Card or bank details typed into the fake page go straight to the scammers, and the supposed one-time fee can hide a subscription that keeps charging. Its advice: check a promotion only on the company's official website or app.

In Mexico, Temu's customer service told N+ Univision in June 2024 (in Spanish) that a Facebook ad promising "millions of gifts" was a scam or a fake ad, and that its official promotions are announced on its website and in the app. It also asked people to be careful with social media ads offering Temu gift cards, product-reviewer jobs, mystery boxes or $750 rewards.

What to do

• If you want to join a promotion, open the official Temu app yourself and look for it there, instead of tapping the link in an ad or a message.
• Before you invite anyone or pay for an order to "unlock" gifts, read that game's rules: how many people it asks for, whether they must be new users or make a purchase, whether you have to buy something, how long you have, and whether what comes back is money or app credit.
• Don't type your card details into a page you reached from an ad or a message about gifts, and don't pay a "delivery fee" to claim a prize.
• Got a message or saw an ad about Temu gifts? Paste the text into VOM or upload a screenshot before you tap the link. VOM can't check whether a link is safe, but it reads what the message says.

If you already gave your card details

• In the US, the FTC says to report it to your bank or credit union right away, using the number on the back of your card or your account online or in its app, and to ask them to refund your money.
• You can report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If a scammer has your personal information, the FTC points to IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan.
