How to Verify Whether an Image, Screenshot, or Claim Is AI-Generated or Fake

A finished check should separate two issues: whether the media appears authentic, and whether the claim attached to it is supported by evidence. Start with the specific thing you want to check

Save the image or screenshot, copy the exact wording of the claim, and preserve the surrounding context. Then separate what you found into three categories: evidence that supports the claim, evidence that contradicts it, and information that does not resolve it. The third category matters. An image can look plausible without proving when or where it was made. A screenshot can be genuine without proving that the statement inside it is true. A search can find repetition without finding independent support.

Manual checking stops where the available evidence stops. You may not find an original file, an authoritative source, enough context, or reliable information about the event. In those cases, “I could not verify this” is more accurate than forcing a yes-or-no conclusion. Do not treat visual inspection alone as proof that media is real or AI-generated.
