Create AI Fake? First Check Whether the Image or Claim Is Real

Every verdict carries a confidence score and, when research finds them, the sources behind it.

If you searched for “create AI fake” because you just saw a suspicious image, video, or screenshot, start with the thing you actually need to know: is it authentic, AI-generated, or impossible to establish from the available evidence?

A finished check should not be a hunch. For an image, the answer should identify it as likely authentic, likely AI-generated, or unverifiable. For the claim shown in an image or screenshot, the answer should give a true, false, or inconclusive verdict, along with a confidence score and any sources the check found. If the evidence cannot settle the claim, the responsible answer is inconclusive—not a forced yes or no.

The manual method

You can investigate a suspicious image or screenshot yourself. Keep the image or screenshot unchanged, then work through these steps:

  1. Separate the image from the claim. An image can be genuine while the caption is misleading. A screenshot can accurately show what appeared on a screen while still presenting a false claim. Treat “Is this image real?” and “Is this claim true?” as two different checks.

  2. Read every visible detail. Look at the text, names, dates, locations, logos, account names, and surrounding context. If the image is a screenshot, copy the exact wording of the claim. Small changes in wording can change what needs to be verified.

  3. Look for the original context. Search distinctive phrases from the image or screenshot. Compare the version you received with the earliest or most complete version you can find. Check whether the surrounding caption says what the image appears to say.

  4. Compare sources. Search for reporting or primary material that addresses the same event or statement. Note whether the sources support the claim, contradict it, or leave important parts unanswered. Do not treat a repeated post as independent confirmation simply because it appears in several places.

  5. Inspect the image itself. Examine faces, hands, text, reflections, shadows, edges, and objects that appear inconsistent. These details may give you reasons to investigate further, but visual inspection alone does not provide a complete verdict.

  6. Record what the evidence can actually establish. Keep separate notes for what is visible, what a source says, and what remains unknown. If the evidence points in different directions, preserve that uncertainty instead of converting it into confidence.

This method gives you a trail of observations and sources. It also has a clear stopping point. You may not find an original source. The available sources may repeat one another, disagree, or fail to address the specific wording in the screenshot. An image may contain too little context to determine where it came from. Visual details may look suspicious without proving how the image was made. In those cases, the honest result is that the item is unresolved—not that it is definitely real or definitely fake.
